The Spring 2013 "Brown Bag Lunch" Series to Be Launched

The Honors Academy's first Brown Bag Lunch for Spring 2013, featuring a presentation on Romare Bearden – a major 20th Century-American artist, will be held on February 15. "We are experimenting with having these events on Friday afternoons, and your presence can help make this a great success," said Honors Academy Coordinator Doug Branch.

Memphis Brooks Museum of Art Curator Stanton Thomas will present a talk on Bearden in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition at the Brooks. Bearden was a "descendent" of the Harlem Renaissance, having produced much of his work in the decades after that movement. The bright colors and jarring juxtapositions of his work reflect black history and music, especially jazz, which we can imagine as an acoustic equivalent to his paintings and collages.

"Thomas has spoken to us before, and he's a lively, knowledgeable speaker. I know you will not want to miss this," said Branch.
